Majority of Americans Would Support Consensus Choice Voting

As Better Choices for Democracy launches a national campaign to advocate for Consensus Choice Voting, majorities of Americans say this election system reform “would make elections more representative of voter preferences,” according to a joint Better Choices/Swayable survey (randomized control trial, N=3,775, March 2025).

While some two-thirds of surveyed voters agree that “Our current electoral system is failing the American people,” they also believe Consensus Choice Voting is a solution:

  • 63.2% agree: Consensus Choice “would make it possible for more people like me to have a say in choosing the leaders who represent us” and 62.3% say it “would lead to elected leaders caring more about people like me.”

  • 64% agree: Consensus Choice “would make elections more representative of voter preferences by ensuring that the candidate with the broadest support wins.”

  • 62% agree: Consensus Choice “would reduce political divisions by incentivizing candidates to appeal to a broader range of voters.”

Consensus Choice Voting is a commonsense reform that gives voters more choices and an equal say in choosing leaders. It breaks the vicious cycle of toxic politics by reforming the rules of the election system so that candidates must aim to earn the support of majorities of voters, not just their partisan base. Consensus Choice removes the structural incentives for division and replaces them with incentives for compromise. If we want leaders who work for all of us, we need a system that rewards bringing people together—not tearing them apart.
