Democracy in Crisis?

Democracy In Crisis by Carah Whaley

A new national survey by YouGov paints a sobering picture: more than half of Americans believe democracy is not working in the United States.

When asked how well democracy is working today, only 43% of Americans said “very well” or “somewhat well.” In contrast, a majority—56%—said democracy is working “not too well” or “not at all well.” When broken down by partisan identification, 74% of Democrats, 65% of Independents, and even 31% of Republicans express dissatisfaction.

Perhaps most striking, 56% of Americans agree that the U.S. is currently in a constitutional crisis.

This widespread loss of confidence in democracy is a wake-up call that the system isn’t working as it should.

We need election rules that will restore confidence in our system of self-governance.

We need an election system where every voter matters, and electoral rules that encourage participation and representation—not division or disillusionment.
