Electoral Integrity in the U.S.: New Report Highlights the Need for Reform

Four Principles of Electoral Integrity, Electoral Integrity Project

A new report from the Electoral Integrity Project paints a mixed picture for American democracy following the 2024 presidential election. While the counting, results and procedural aspects of the election were strong, the U.S. scored just 54 out of 100 for overall electoral integrity, placing it behind most established democracies. Declines were seen in all four key principles of electoral integrity, but most notably along the dimensions of participation and deliberation.

The report highlights serious challenges facing U.S. elections, including disinformation, a toxic media environment, gerrymandering, and the outsized influence of money in politics. These issues combine to undermine confidence and limit meaningful participation for too many voters.

The takeaway is clear: while our basic election mechanics are holding up, the broader health of our democracy requires urgent attention and action. Addressing these challenges will take reforms that put voters first and make every voter matter.
