Same Voters, Different Winners: Why Rules Matter

In this video, University of Maryland Professor Eric Pacuit explains how and why different election rules can produce different winners and what that means for democracy.

Simple “pick one” voting ignores most of what people think. Party primaries shut some voters out of the key choice and ranked choice voting (Instant Runoff) still ignores important opinions.

Consensus choice voting works differently. It takes into account every head-to-head comparison. So every voter has a say in the decision about who should win. The rules we use to choose our leaders are up to us. We should choose rules that take every voter seriously and reward candidates who build bridges rather than deepen divisions.
